Roots of English is one of the most interesting way to learn more new words and to improve your vocab. English language is made up of four parts. These are -

  •     GREEK ROOTS
  •     GERMAN ROOTS
  •     FRENCH ROOTS
  •     LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.

What is a root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.

How many parts is a word made of?

A word is made up of three parts.

For example – Unhappily

Here 'Un' is a prefix, 'happy' is the root and 'ly' is the suffix.

Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

Now today we have taken 'Mot' as a ROOT which has a meaning: Move.

Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,

1) Motivation - (Mot-e-way-tion) - A reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way

Usage - There seems to be a lack of motivation among the staff.

2) Demot - (De-mot) - To reduce in grade, rank, or status

Usage - This is like trying to demote a grizzly to the status of a teddy bear by merely changing its name.

3) Locomotion - (Loco-motion) - Movement or the ability to move from one place to another

Usage - He specialisms in the mechanics of locomotion.

4) Commotion - (Cum-motion) - A state of confused and noisy disturbance

Usage - His arrival caused quite a commotion.

5) Motif - (Mot-if) - A dominant or recurring idea in an artistic work

Usage - The motif of betrayal and loss is crucial in all these stories.

6) Emote - (Em-ot) - (especially of an actor) portray emotion in a theatrical manner

Usage - The dance emote got a ton of laughs.

7) Motel - (Mot-el) - A roadside hotel designed primarily for motorists, typically having the rooms arranged in low blocks with parking directly outside

Usage - The gas station just neighbours to the motel.

8) Emotive – (Im-o-tive) - Arousing or able to arouse intense feeling

Usage - They are expressed in highly emotive language.

THE GOVERNOR The Governor is the  De   Jure  executive head at the state level. His position is analogous to that of the President at the centre. The Governor is appointed by the president.
